Up until now, you have learned some of the techniques to get SEARCH ENGINES to your website. That is 50% of SEO. The other 50% is getting PEOPLE to your website.
When people query the search browser they actually are tapping into a large database or stored information. There is usually a delay from the crawl cycle to the index cycle. Although your website may have been crawled, it won’t show up on the index until the next refresh. If you change your web pages, crawler based search browsers eventually find these changes during the crawl cycle. Page titles, body text and other elements all play a role in how well you are found in the index of a particular key phrase. Search browsers use indexes to store pages of a website.
What are Search Browsers | What are Search Engines
A directory depends on humans for its listings. You submit a short description to the directory for your entire website, or editors write one for websites they review. A search looks for matches only in the descriptions submitted. Changing your web pages has no effect on your listing. When you improve a website it has nothing to do with improving your listing in a directory. Having a good website might be more likely to get clicks and therefore popularity plays a role in directories.

Once you get all your KEY PHRASES, you use them to write your TITLES and DESCRIPTIONS (which contain the KEY PHRASES). The KEY PHRASES, TITLES and DESCRIPTIONS are actually in the “code” of your website. To view your code you click on VIEW / SOURCE in the top of your browser. For Firefox, just right-click and select VIEW PAGE SOURCE.
Here are your meta tags in your website code for just one web page. Each page can have different meta tags.
Your web designer will need to insert your KEY PHRASES, TITLES and DESCRIPTIONS into your code. There are certain rules to follow when using KEY PHRASES that need to be practiced. The KEY PHRASE meta tag section may no longer be valid according to SEO information I have read, but others say to still leave it in as you never know if Google will use it again.
Next, you must insert the KEY PHRASES used in the meta tags, into the actual text on your web page. Having the KEY PHRASES literally on the page is what brings the page up in the search engine. You want to optimize each and every web page for that web page only. For example, if you are talking about one of your services, use an entire web page for only one service and only use key phrases for that one service.
When you are a small or start-up company you need to think out-of-the-box. Its very difficult to compete with obvious key phrases. For example, it would be very hard for me to compete with Las Vegas Web Designer. Sometimes using the less competitive phrases is your best strategy.
Remember its just a single web page competing with every single web page on the internet. I may use something like “Affordable Web Builder” or “Web Pages including SEO”.
Use Google Insights to access the competitiveness of a key phrase.

Have a fabulous evening.
The first step in getting your website found in search engines starts with the way your website is structured. Web Designers are NOT required to do Search Engine Optimization on your website. They just build the site and are usually gone! You have to hire Search Engine Optimization (SEO) companies to then come in and optimize your new website.
SEO should also be applied every few months to keep the website fresh with new key phrases. Search Engines actually reward you by pushing you up in the search engines for “changing” “fresh” content.
In the old days, all websites were built in HTML, which is called a “static” web page, meaning you can’t change its content without a web designer going in and changing content for you. These types of websites are now outdated.
All websites today are “dynamic” websites (content management systems – such as Joomla and WordPress), which means the entire website is a database and the user and visitors can interact with the website and actually change the content (i.e. a newsletter signup is actually adding content to your website by adding a name and email address). So, the actual website itself is giving you search engine optimization without even applying the key phrases yet. Just more tools to get you visible.
Therefore, structure is the most important aspect in getting started in SEO. When someone searches for you with key phrases, your web pages come up in the search engine. Each web page has a TITLE and a DESCRIPTION.
You have the opportunity to optimize EACH and EVERY web page on your website with different TITLES and DESCRIPTIONS using different key phrases.
Most web designers will just make all your TITLES the name of your company or website, not realizing each title can be different. They also may not realize they can optimize the DESCRIPTION for the key phrases as well. If they leave the DESCRIPTIONS blank, the search engine will just pull text from the page to just place something there. It doesn’t mean the web designer actually optimized the DESCRIPTION for you.
My philosophy is what is the point of building a website if it can’t be found in search engines? This is why I offer SEO FREE for life when you purchase a website at Web Design Island. You can find out more at Web Design Island on what makes us completely different from other web design companies.
More to come on writing your web pages.

Hi everyone,
Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Sorry it took me so long to get back, but you know, its the holidays! Ok, back to where I left off…
Now, before determining the key phrases for your website, you need to be real clear on who your ideal customer is. This information is vital to your marketing efforts, as it will determine how you do all your marketing, not just your website.
Here are a few useful guides to determining your ideal customer:
Your ideal customer is the one who absolutely should buy your product or service. It’s just perfect for them. They have the need, they have the money, they have the buy-in of any other stakeholders (spouses, parents, co-workers, etc.), and they have a natural affinity for you and your company. On a piece of paper imagine that you are your ideal customer (try to do it in a word document so you can just copy/paste your list into the Google generator). Jot down the answers to these questions “pretending to be the ideal customer that is searching for your site:
Pretending to be the ideal customer, write the following: “If I could only…” and complete the sentence from the ideal customer’s point of view.
FOR EXAMPLE
“If only I could find a Web Designer that is easy to work with”.
Now answer these questions pertaining to your sentence. Remember this is from the ideal customer’s point of view that is searching for you.
Now you have your ideal customer and their emotions and thoughts before they are about to search for you. Starting with EACH WEB PAGE on your site, read whats already on your web page and write key phrases/sentences using the thoughts and emotions of your ideal customer that they would key in to a search engine to find this particular web page.
This list of key phrases (for each and every web page on your site) is what you will put into the Google generator. You need to do each page as they are totally unrelated, because any one of your web pages can come up in a search – its not always the first page (home). The page that will come up is the one that was best optimized for whatever the person used to search for the page in Google (the key phrases used).
Hope this makes sense…until next time.
Happy Halloween! It’s my favorite time of year! As promised, we shall begin Search Engine Optimization (SEO) 101.
Search Engine Optimization means getting web pages (not websites), found in search engines such as “Google”. SEO is an “organic” search, meaning that you want people to find your web pages when they DON’T know your company name or website domain name (i.e. www.WebDesignIsland.com). You want the web page to come up “organically” when someone uses a key phase.
There is such a thing as a key phrase generator that is free by Google that you can actually put in key phrases to see how many times that key phrase is searched, weekly, monthly, locally, globally, etc. This generator is used to determine what key phrases you will want to put in your web pages to get them pulled up in the search engines, when someone uses those phrases.
Key phrases go into the actual text in your web pages and in the code of your web pages. They should also be used in link names and you can even name your photos (graphics) with the name of the key phrase. The whole point is to have them contained in the page.
All the links you see on a Google page are all individual web pages. You have the opportunity to optimize each and every one of your web pages with different key phrases for each page, as if they are totally unrelated. If each page is optimized for the phrase being searched, that page will come up and the visitor will be satisfied with the information they were searching for.
